Halloween is a time to dress up as characters from TV shows and cartoons to be entertaining and have fun with others. Wearing another culture's meaningful clothing and making fun of their rituals is just absurd and it is crossing the line. The video is correct by saying that people do not realize that the cultural costume they are wearing has a deeper meaning to another person.  Dressing up as your favorite character from a cartoon or TV show is acceptable, but wearing clothes that discriminate other people is intolerable. Wearing any costumes during Halloween means that it is either meant to be funny or scary and wearing cultural clothes are a way of saying that their culture is funny or scary.

People that wear these types of clothing should not be the ones that should be questioned, instead the stores that sell these costumes are the ones to be mad at. We can't get mad at the people wearing them because they don't now the importance of this. There are many people, mainly kids walking around in these costumes. Their parents would be the one to tell them the value of respecting other people's cultures and morals. People may have not have intended to offend that way but they should at least respect someone else's culture.

I, personally have not worn a cultural costume because I understand that it may have an affect on someone else and they might not like it. Instead of actually dressing up as a character, I try to make my costumes much more funny and creative so that people do not get offended by it and also makes other people laugh.

A way that we can discourage the use of these types of costumes is by banning it in the first place. These type of costumes should not be sold in stores. Canada is a such a diverse country and something like that happening is unacceptable because here in Canada, we try to respect other peoples culture and privacy and not discriminate them. Everyone must know what their costume represents and how it is socially acceptable.

  1. I agree with you Jake. There are many cultural clothing that hold deep meaning and significant values to many people. It is unacceptable to think that there are so many people that wear these clothes as a funny or scary costume during a frivolous time. I agree with you when you say that there are many children and parents that are unaware of the meaning behind these costumes and do not mean any harm; your point that it is not the parents to blame, but rather the stores that sell these costumes. I also believe that these costumes should be banned in costume stores, and if someone were to require one they would need to go to an authentic tailor. I also believe that this problem may be solved in schools, if taught about the problem behind cultural appropriation, many children would not feel the need to dress up in these cultural clothes.

  2. I completely agree with you Jake. Different cultures have different clothes that they value and believe in. Dressing up in cultural clothes during Halloween is unacceptable especially during a time like such. In my opinion, this definitely disrespects the clothes and the culture as a whole. I agree with your statement about how children might not know the point of the cultural clothing, but I still don't believe they should be wearing them. It doesn't make any sense to wear something without understanding the meaning behind it. Therefore, I wouldn't blame the store owners, but I would blame those parents who don't show any care about the importance of one's cultural clothing. As you said, these cultural clothes should not be sold in stores for customers to purchase to wear on days such as Halloween.

  3. I wholeheartedly agree with you, Jake. Halloween is a time for people to have fun, wear costumes and eat candy. Sometimes, you have a hard time choosing a costume, sometimes you've been planning what you want to be since last Halloween. Some costumes are popular choices, and some, people do not understand. What I do not understand is, why people don't think about sensitive topics when they choose their costume.

  4. I definitely agree with your Jake. The reality is cultural appropriation is a stain on American history. It's the manifestation of one of the earliest, most enduring racist ideals: the belief that people who belong to marginalized cultures are somehow less than human. Once you've dehumanized someone, you can co-opt their culture with ease; their language, dress, and customs aren't worthy of the respect you reserve for your own. On top of centuries of oppression, marginalized groups must now contend with people mocking their identity, right in front of their faces.
